Met office: predict a hotter than average summer, this is great for sun worshipers but not for lawn lovers, the lawn is afterall the most heavily planted area of the garden containing many thousands of individual plants, each of which needs moisture as any living plant does, heat stress will vary depending on soil type, location, mowing practices and heights of cut, various practices can help your turf before it suffers

1,Awell fed lawn will cope and recover much faster

2Raise height of cut on mowers and check blade sharpness a blunt blade tears the leaf leaving the plant tissue open to disease

3soil compaction restricts movement of vital nutrients and sealing the surface, inhibiting water movement, a garden fork spiking at 4" centers will be good for small areas but for larger areas a mechanical one can be hired

4 A wetting agent application will help solve dry patch problems, also aiding water penertration where needed

5 Irrigating  lawns subject to restrictions : irrigation should be of a deep drench type allowing water to the rootzone, shallow frequent irrigation encourages shallow rooting,

Hose Pipe Ban Plays Havoc With Lawns

Everyone suffered this summer not least the lawns which either died or survived on a diet of dish or bath water. Be prepared next summer by being proactive in the spring. Try to get your lawn as healthy as early in the season as possible. This will be of great benefit to your lawn and yourselves. Keep the height of cut up one notch higher than normal so as not to stress the grass out. A number of operations can be carried out by ourselves to aid your lawn. These include, aeration, soil conditioners, wetting agents and dressings. Not forgetting a comprehensive nutrition program.
